5 Easy Ways to Find a Unique Website Niche

If you want to build a successful site then it’s essential that you find a unique niche.

A unique niche allows you to offer opportunities and solutions that aren’t available from rivals. It allows you to become an authority in your niche and a market leader.

A lot of people tell me, though, that the last unique website niche was snapped up in 2008!

Sure, the web’s a crowded place and, on the surface, it may look as though there are no unique niches left. However, the truth is that there are unlimited niches available.

Let’s take a look at some great ways to generate a unique website niche.

1. How to Dig Deep and Find That Specialized Niche

Grab a piece of paper and write down all the subjects you love and could discuss for hours.

My list would look a bit like this:

  • Retro trainers
  • British TV
  • Comedy
  • Gadgets
  • Internet marketing
  • Making money

They’re all popular subjects, but you’re likely thinking “I’ve seen a million of those sites.”

And you probably have.

However, what you need to do is dig a bit deeper and find a specialist sub-niche.

I love Adidas trainers and there’s lots of info online about sales and the brand’s history, but is there a site devoted to Adidas’ 1970s range? NO!

There’s your first unique niche!

2. What’s Hot Right Now?

Identifying emerging niches is a good way to get a head start on your rivals. Giving people what they want is the number one aim in business, so make sure you’re clued up on their needs.

A great way to find these new niches is to take a look at what people are buying.

Ebay is a great place to head to look at their popular categories and the top searches they receive. Another marketplace to keep an eye on is Amazon as their best sellers indicate what’s popular with the masses.

Ebay’s top searches page is a goldmine of ideas

Taking a quick look at these sites we can see that these products are very popular:

  • Nike wristbands
  • Precision level lasers
  • Ceramic heaters

Now, I’ve just had a flick through Google and there are no sites devoted to reviewing and discussing precision level lasers, so why not start a blog on this?

3. Can You a Find Way to Improve an Existing Niche?

Finding a unique niche doesn’t mean you have to discover an untapped market. What you can do is take a current niche and see how you can take it to the next level.

In order to do this you will need to go undercover as a consumer and test the market. Find out what you like and what you dislike about the current options.

If we look at my earlier love of gadgets we’ll find that there are a lot of gadget e-commerce sites. They all sell the same old brands, so why not refresh this?

What about a gadget e-commerce site which only sells gadgets from startup companies who can join the site and advertise their products?

This type of venture will capture the imagination of consumers and developers, so it’s a sure-fire traffic winner.

4. Keep an Eye on the Future

New tech and new environments mean that new problems are created every day. It’s your mission to find these problems and give solutions.

However, in this 24/7 world we live in it’s hard to keep up with all these daily changes. That’s why I use Feedly.

It’s a great platform which allows you to receive the top news stories for specific industries. From these you can discover any ongoing trends and upcoming developments.

Looking at their fashion section reveals that British fashion brands are planning to target tech savvy British males.

Clothes + technology = wearable technology, so how about a blog aimed at British males discussing wearable technology? It’s not out there yet!

There’s your fourth unique niche!

5. Keyword Research

Carrying out keyword research should be a vital part of any site owner’s operation, but it’s not just useful for advertising.

It can also identify trends where competition is low. And where competition is low there’s a potential niche.

Using Google’s Keyword Planner I did a search for comedy keywords. The results showed that there are a high number of searches for “comedy movies”, but low competition for that keyword.

Google’s Keyword Planner can identify lucrative gaps in the market

Searching in Google for “comedy movies” brings up 131 million results, but only a very small percentage of these results are dedicated to comedy movies alone.

So why not create a devoted community and review site to comedy movies? Bidding on the keyword “comedy movies” won’t break the bank and will bring in huge amounts of traffic.

Find Your Unique Niche

I’ve shown that it’s possible, in a short space of time, to generate unique niche ideas in a crowded marketplace.

Not every niche will be successful, but careful research will allow you to identify the niches which have the best chance of success.
